Bourbon of the Year - Elijah Craig Barrel Proof

Perhaps it's odd to declare a bourbon of the year for 2016 right BEFORE bourbon season starts. But the fact is that we're not going to get any limited release bourbon this year. That game ended last year when retails stores started charging secondary market prices for allocated bourbon. Now all the shops we used to stalk come October are charging $700 for George T. Stagg, $1,400 for Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year, and even Old Forester Birthday Bourbon (which we've bought every year since '06) was unattainable. Sad times.

The good news is that there's a much cheaper bourbon that rivals all these guys in the taste department. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof has been hiding in plain sight all these years. And what a sight it is, just look at that marvelous color!!

Now remember for malt whisky you can't always go by color because they often add caramel coloring (unless your malt specifically says "uncoloured" then assume it's been tampered with). But when a bottle says "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey" on it, you know that it's the genuine article. The regulations for "Straight Bourbon" specify no added coloring. All that delicious black coffee darkness comes from hot summers in a charred oak barrel. The fact that ECBP is not watered down to your typical 90 proof allows it to retain its incredible darkness.  But still, it has to be more than that. Perhaps they use extra char on the barrels for these batches?  In any case it's just magical looking isn't it?  #nofilters

Ok can we be totally honest here?  This stuff hit the stores a few weeks ago, but we had to wait to release this post. What were we waiting for? We'll admit it, we were hitting up all our local spots and clearing the shelves. Sorry. But chances are next year people will catch on and this stuff will be selling for $200/bottle.  Right now you can still find it for the original MSRP of around $60. And seriously... Duh.

The latest release, Batch #11, comes in at a testicular circumference-lengthening 69.7% alcohol by volume. Yup, put on your drinking hat and get ready for some one hundred thirty nine point four proof saucy sauce. Just 0.3% more and this stuff would be officially designated "hazmat".  (Yes, for whiskey nerds out there batch #6 did cross the hazmat barrier and it was awesome).  We were also able to find Batch #10 on the shelves which was a paltry 128.8 proof.  P-shaw.  

Tasting Notes

Nose:  Holy thick dripping vanilla, char, leather, tobacco, baking spices, molasses, dark chocolate, bbq. It's all there. What an incredible nose.

Palate: It's alive, man. This is not a beginner's whiskey, but if you are in the game like we are it's just everything you want it to be. Chewy-thick mouthfeel, massive spirit warmth and intensity, incredible sweetness and richness, and very well integrated between all these elements.  I'd drink this stuff all night.

Finish: Just a sublime warm finish. Not as long as a peaty malt, but plenty long for a bourbon. Resting mostly in the vanilla and tree bark department with a rising chest warmth from the insanely high percentage of alcohol you just ingested.  

Review

Well there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is that this is an incredible whiskey, absolutely everything we look for in a bourbon drinker's bourbon - cask strength, super full flavored, smooth at outrageous proof - it's got it all. The bad news is that as soon as we drop this post, you'll never see this bottle for $60 again. Not tooting our own horn here, but it's been known to happen. So gobble these up and let the hunger games begin.

Whisky Live 2014 - Highlights, Low Lights, and Get Ready for an HFSM!!!!

Last night was WhiskyLive 2014 in New York City. Shout out to Mia Swatkowski and everyone at WhiskyLive for the amazing hospitality!! Highly highly recommended that if you missed it this year you make sure to sign up early for next year or check out one of their other shows around the world.

There were some awesome highlights, a few newsworthy new releases, a total FAIL, and then there was an HFSM. That stands for a "Holy F*cking Sh*t Moment". The kind of once-in-a-lifetime whiskey experience that we'll never forget.

First the Highlights

This guy was there...

That's Bernie Lubbers from Heaven Hill.  Badass.  And he wasn't just there to look pretty.  He poured us the "Devil's Bottling" of one of our favorite whiskies, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof.  So named of course because of it's 66.6% ABV.  

It's every bit as good as the first edition which was 134.2 proof.  Big sugary bourbon flavor-bomb of vanilla nutmeg, caramel, oak, and barbecued meats with unreal smoothness at the monster proof.  An unbelievable bourbon especially at the price (should retail $40-$50).  

Speaking of Elijah Craig, our favorite bourbon of the night was probably this gem from Brandy Library.  Look how happy Jeffrey looks just to be holding it.  Do you think he'll let us have any??

One of the last remaining stock of their Elijah Craig 18-year Single Barrel (a private barrel pick they did with Heaven Hill some years back).  Look at the color on that sucker:

It had everything we love about Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, but upped the ante with a maturity level that was off the charts.  Think: all those flavors we mentioned above, but with the wood both more dominant and much mellower (yes those two things can happen at once).  And with all the flavor components melding together more completely (sweetness, richness, spice, and wood less separate and becoming part of one complete taste).

Ardbeg had a wacky looking new release called Auriverdes (Green & Gold).  

Actually just kidding, they just had a really Game of Thrones looking empty bottle chained up and weren't actually serving it.  Next...

Our buddy (not to mention hands down the greatest American craft distiller) Chip Tate's beard has grown even more impressive:

As have his spirits.  He's been playing with combinations of our favorite Balcones whiskies.  They make a concoction called Rumble which is a sugar cane based spirit.  We still hope to review Rumble Cask soon.  But what we tasted last night was Chip's award winning single malt, then taken further aged in Rumble casks: Balcones Single Malt Rumble Cask Finished.  It was out of this world good.  The great finesse of Balcones malt with an edge of sweetness and syrup that gives it a dynamite finish.  Our favorite of Chip's creations is the Brimstone Resurrection, a Frankenstein-ian creation born from a badly burned batch of corn whiskey.  So to put a twist on things, Chip also shared the Single Malt Resurrection Cask.  This time the finish was smoldering, completely unique, a well-balanced sweet malt ending up in a campfire smoke pit.  One of the best whiskies of the night without a doubt.

New & Newsworthy

Two new and newsworthy bottles were produced:

Yes the new 2014 Four Roses Limited Edition Single Barrel!!  So fresh out of the oven it doesn't even have a proper label yet.  We loved last year's batch so much, an OBSK.  This one is an 11-Year OESF.  We hadn't tried that recipe yet.  It's a higher corn mash bill so we expected it to be even sweeter.  That wasn't the case, it's not quite as sweet and rich as the '13 SiB, but it's more delicate and has an awesome crisp wood on it combined with a very elegant perfumy spiciness.  Honestly it's a little difficult to really judge something like this after tasting so many other whiskies, but we're pretty confident that it's a winner and can't wait to go hunting for a bottle when it comes out in June!

And another (LONG ANTICIPATED) new release:

2014 Michter's 10-Year Rye!!!!   (queue trumpets).  We've been so patient, rationing the last drops of our 7k rye to half a glass a month and then quietly sobbing ourselves to sleep.  First reaction, sadly it doesn't have the dynamite vanilla nose of the old version.  It's still quite tasty, but again we'll reserve final judgement for a more careful (read: sober) tasting.  Still very excited that this one's on the way.  Also expected in stores this summer.

FAIL!

Bomb of the night:  Widow Jane "Heirloom Varietals".  

We tried both the "Wapsie Valley" and the "Bloody Butcher".  These slim and tall 375ml half bottles go for around $150, and they're only a year old!  Could they by some magic be worth that redonkulous price tag?  In a word: no.  They taste like burnt popcorn and rubber cement.  Sorry dude.  Love the hat though.

Buzz-Worthy

Everyone's talking about The General from Compass Box.  

Robin Robinson explains that it is a blend of two blends.  One of them at 33 years of age and the other at 40.  This was a very nice dram.  We're not 100% running out to buy one at $300, but it was very cool to try.  Incredibly smooth at cask strength 53%, with all kinds of good old scotch goodness like old leather, aromatic pipe smoke, and maybe a hint of sweet port wine.  We would have liked a little more smoke to really put this one over the top.  We went back to Robin to end the night with Peat Monster Tenth Anniversary, which is awesome, touching all the right notes of Islay smoke (there's got to be some Laphroaig in there!!).  

Robin's daughter Rose was also there, pouring for Glen Grant.  

We've pretty much spoiled ourselves drinking 1970's Grants last year for our birthdays, but the Five Decades is a really nice thing if you're a fan of the Grant.  It's less of a sherry bomb than the older guys and runs smooth and down the middle.

Last but not least our buddy Raj from Purple Valley was in the house.

We got to try English Whisky Company Classic Malt.  Both this one and their Chapter 11 Heavily Peated version are definitely worth trying.  English single malt is giving scotch a run for it's money!

Review: Elijah Craig 21-Year Single Barrel Bourbon - An Old, and Expensive Beast

As Heaven Hill's flagship standard offering, Elijah Craig is a bourbon drinker's staple.  The standard 12-year is a very solid juice and has a lot going for it.  Firstly it may be the only remaining 12-year bourbon that you can find on the shelf, let alone at $25.  Moving up a step, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof was perhaps the most stunning new release of 2013.  No, it didn't win our fantasy bourbon tourney, but just to make that list, and beat out George T. Stagg in the first round is extraordinary.  Doubly so considering it hit the shelves at $40-50.  According to marketing hype, the Baptist preacher Elijah Craig invented the charred oak barrel.  Whether or not you believe that story, take one look the wildly dark color of ECBP and take a sip of the deeply caramelized woody goodness and you get the picture.  Sadly you'd be hard pressed to find ECBP on the shelves any more.  It pretty much jumped into the shopping baskets of your faithful hubby and wifey and all us other bourbon hunter/picker obsessive types.

Elijah Craig 21 Year Single Barrel

Then there's the ultra-premium top shelf Elijah Craig Single Barrel.  They've been releasing older and older lines of single barrels year after year, starting at 18-years, then 20, and now 21 year.  When the 18 came out, it was pretty spectacular.  It was priced around $45-$60, was by far the most available highly aged bourbon on the market, and rocked a lot of people's worlds.  A lot of sad faces could be found at local liquor stores a couple of years ago when EC18 was discontinued.

Well, fans of late great EC18 were pretty pumped some months later to find Elijah Craig 20-Year on the shelves.  But then many of us did a double take (bourbon spit take??) to see a price tag of $129.99 or higher.  Sure, it's not uncommon for a couple extra years of age to come at a serious markup - see Pappy 15-Year at $80 vs the 20-Year at $150.  But still, to go from the very good and highly affordable 18-year straight to this as the only option was a bit of a pickle.  Fast forward another year and the 21-Year is hitting shelves at anywhere from $149.99 to $189.99!

So, not that price should be the #1 factor in choosing a whiskey, but we're hitting up this bottle with pretty high expectations.  ECBP at $40 sets the bar really high, and the all-to-recent availability of EC18 at under $80 makes us hope that the new release is a really special one of a kind bottle.

Tasting Notes

Nose:  Getting a lot of corn on the cob here.  Some nice farmy, buttery, freshness.  A nice mellow oak comes next.  Then some little pops of heat - maybe yellow mustard or wasabi.

Palate:  The corn moves into grain and spice.  Definitely tasting a high rye content here with a spicy somewhat thin to medium body with a big grainy kick.

Finish:  Nice finish.  The grain and sweetness come together.  There's a moderate spirit warmth with a little pinch of somewhat pleasant alcohol burn.  (note here: this is one of those bottles that opens up really hot and then mellows out considerably over a couple of weeks - if you open it and drink most of the bottle in the same night you will be disappointed - buy it, cork it, and let it sit for some time before you drink it!).


Review

Well, it's hard to find anything wrong with this whiskey, but at the same time it's not blowing our minds.  And for the money, we sort of expect to have our minds blown.  Two mild criticisms here: 1) a 21 year old bourbon that's down-proofed to forty-five percent should be smooth as crap or 2) if it's not the smoothest thing we've ever tasted, it should have huge flavor profile.  This isn't really falling into either category.

Would we buy this again?  Short answer, yes.  Assuming it's the only 21 year bourbon you're going to be able to find (which is likely) it's worthy of picking up for a special occasion.  There are a lot of younger whiskeys that we prefer, but are more difficult to find - like Four Roses 125th Anniversary, any of the Pappy or Buffalo Trace Antique bottles, Angel's Envy Cask Strength, etc.  If you can find it, we'd recommend going for the Parker's Heritage Collection Promise of Hope, which at $90 - and interestingly only around 10-years old - we find has a fuller and more interesting flavor.

Anyway you're not hurting too much sitting back with a bottle of EC21.  You have to give Heaven Hill points for putting out a solid supply of top-end bourbon across the country.  So, given the current bourbon drought, on the right special occasion, go for it.  But with a little hunting and picking you can definitely find more interesting choices out there.

Fantasy Bourbon Game 5 - The SemiFinals Begin! Pappy Van Winkle 15-Year versus Elijah Craig Barrel Proof

This is Game Five of SmokyBeast's 2013 Fantasy Bourbon League.  If you're tuning in for the first time, the series starts here...

Brass Tacks

We're getting down to 'em.  What you've all been waiting for.  The four top beasts in the land.  The men have been separated from the boys.  It's time to win or go home.  Let's get to it.

Face-to-Face

They're both dark and lovely, but ECBP is half a shade darker if that means anything...

Nose-to-Nose

PVW: Straight sweet & wood.  Big chocolate, vanilla, & brown sugar smack up against men's club leather chairs and big oak desks.

ECBP:  It's got the wood, but not quite the sweet.  The leather and left-over Cohibas are there, but it doesn't quite have the badass sweets of the Pappy.  PVW takes Round 1.

Body-to-Body

PVW:  It stays right there in the pocket with the huge wood and huge sweetness.  Tough to find any weaknesses here.

ECBP:  Such a strong palate.  Just thick buttery oil across the tongue, like melting charred wood over butter.  The ECBP takes the Palate, it's 1 - to -1!

End Game

PVW: Man, despite all the hype, there's a reason that Pappy is flying off the shelves at recockulous multiples of MSRP.  Especially at 107 proof, all the strength and the sweetness and the wood come together for a blast of BOURBON.  It's just what bourbon should be.

ECBP:  The end game has always been the preacher's downfall, and it's never been more apparent than next to big Pappy.  It's got a bitterness that creeps up your throat to the back of your nose.  It's not a problem on its own.  Hell, next to 95% of the hooch on the market, this stuff is tops.  But next to the Pappy, it's very apparent how the finish just doesn't stack up.

Final Score

It's Pappy 15 by 2 - to - 1, Nose & Finish, but honestly we knew from the first nose (we did it blind a few times and could always pick the Pappy w/o tasting) that ECBP didn't quite measure up.  Pappy holds it's seat with a strong showing in the Semis!

Fantasy Bourbon GAME 2: George T. Stagg vs Elijah Craig Barrel Proof

Now on to today's battle...

Barrel Proof Beasts

Today's contest is a battle between two barrel-proof beasts.  George T. Stagg is the powerhouse of the yearly Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.  This year's bottling comes in at a whopping 128.2%.  Stagg certainly wasn't the first straight-from-the barrel whiskey ever produced, but the degree of smoothness and drinkability without dilution that Stagg has achieved over the years has set a high bar and Stagg has championed a huge trend towards barrel proof releases in the industry.  Barrel proof bourbon might not be a good starting point for whiskey novices.  But once you start drinking it, the sheer intensity of the flavor can make it hard to go back to the watered-down standard proof brands.

In March of this year, Heaven Hill announced that they'd be releasing a non-chill-filtered, barrel strength version of their popular 12-Year bourbon.  Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (ECBP in bourbon-speak) became an instant hit.  It leapt off the shelves in three different releases that barely saw the inside of a store between the delivery truck and the shopping bag.  Retailing between $35 and $50, it's hard to argue that ECBP was the buy of the year.  The release we're tasting is 134.2%, topping Stagg in the ABV department.

So, from the literal height of the bottles, to the brand status (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is almost as hard to find as Pappy Van Winkle this year), to the price tag, we've got ourselves a real David v. Goliath match on our hands.  Could the short cheap rookie contender upset the big daddy of barrel proof beasts?  Let's pour!

2013 George T. Stagg (128.2%) and Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, 1st Edition (134.2%)

Nose-to-Nose

GTS: Blistering shishito peppers oozing spice, salt, and rich oils.

ECBP: Way deep into the old men's club aromas of cracking leather, furniture polish, oak, and cigar tobacco.  Elijah has won the nose by a hair.

Body-to-Body

GTS: So smooth for the rocket fuel proof that is Stagg.  We've never quite gotten used to how drinkable this stuff is at this level of power.  Explosions of wood, char, resiny sweetness, & huge spice across the tongue.

ECBP: Holy crap, it's even stronger (134.2 proof!!!) and...  we'll just come out and say it, it's smoother.  The wood sucks that alcohol burn right up and it's just stunningly drinkable.  The crowd goes wild as Elijah takes the Palate!

End Game

GTS: The finish is probably George's best moment.  You can be drinking whiskey all night but this one just cuts right through with such intensity of flavor, again with the striking balance of restraint at this immense power.

ECBP:  Not so for Elijah.  He's nowhere near the end-game of the Stagg.  While the nose and body are up in the stratosphere, there is a bitterness to the finish that gives big points away in the last quarter.


The Final Score

We've got our first big upset!  Despite a near come-back at the end, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof has defeated George T. Stagg, our 3-seat (not to mention double the price at retail!).  What a stunning victory for the rookie.  One for the highlight reels.
